Valvoline Instant Oil Change Asheville Public Restroom

The unisex bathroom at Valvoline Instant Oil Change in North Asheville.

Upon entry into the unisex washroom at Valvoline, we were greeted by a smell that could most charitably be described as funky, or, more accurately, like a rotting carcass in the back seat of an abandoned Tucker. On the face of it, it would appear that the smell has nothing to do with the decor, except, in this case, there is a large cart inside the room filled with cleaning supplies that serves as the visual focal point of the room. Certainly, the management at Valvoline could find a cleaner on that cart that could at least dampen the smell. All was not lost, however, in the decor department as there is an interesting painting on the wall, added, no doubt, in an attempt to bring cheer to the otherwise drab room.  Decor = 4

The walls are smeared with a greasy filth, but, in fairness, this is a place that changes oil all day. The workers who use this room (and they are a great crew) actually keep it fairly tidy considering how dirty their hands must be upon entry. Of course, this room is in the customer lounge area, which means it is supposed to be available to the public, not just the staff at Valvoline. At this point, the only way to get the walls clean again would be to repaint them. We suggest a color other than the current “Gulag White.”  Cleanliness = 3

The room is conveniently located in the customer lounge. Outside the room are all sorts of goodies for customers, but the inside of the john is an amenities desert.  Amenities = 2
